The Health And… Childhood and Opportunity

Childhood – always known to be formative to adult physical and mental health – is now also recognized as foundational for other dimensions of well-being across the life course, including economic and social opportunity.

Join Richard A. Carranza, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, and other tremendous speakers for the Health And… Childhood and Opportunity conference, hosted by the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health on May 13, 2019.

The Health And… Childhood and Opportunity conference will examine proven and novel approaches to improving health and well-being during childhood that can pave the way for greater opportunity, health and equity in adulthood.  Too often, children’s ability to survive and thrive is limited by modifiable constraints that can only be addressed effectively through partnerships within communities and across sectors (including but not limited to healthcare, education, public health, housing and others).  The conference invites policymakers, researchers, community partners, and health system leaders to explore how to best to foster children’s development to maximize opportunities for health and well-being across the life course.

Bringing together leading innovators from across multiple sectors, the conference will include presentations and discussion about:

  • Novel approaches to improve parenting and education inside and outside of established settings
  • Use of economic interventions to address childhood and family poverty
  • Taking effective approaches to scale

Speakers Include

  • Lawrence Aber, PhD, Willner Family Professor of Psychology and Public Policy, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and University Professor, New York University

The Health And… Conference Series

With the goal of translating research into action to improve urban population health, the “Health And…” Conference series brings together leading investigators, policymakers, practitioners, and community leaders who work at the intersection of health and its many determinants. Throughout the day, we highlight the latest findings, identify front-line innovations, develop pressing questions to investigate, and define promising policies and partnerships in order to advance population health and health equity.

We have held three Health And.. conferences: Health And...Place, Education, Healthcare in 2016, Health And… Racial Equity and Urban Well-Being in 2017, and Health And…Data Science and Public Action in 2018.
