PhD in Neuroscience Events
The program offers numerous opportunities for students to gain valuable experience in communicating scientific concepts and findings, which are essential skills for a future career in biomedical research. In some cases, these entail structured courses or seminars, but in many cases experience comes through community-wide events where students also form important connections with other neuroscientists at NYU and receive valuable feedback on their research projects. Given that there are many chances to present, students are expected to take advantage of at least one of these each year.
Seminars and Meetings
Neuroscience Colloquia
The Joint Neuroscience Colloquia series features distinguished speakers from around the world who visit the university to share cutting-edge research and meet with faculty and trainees. For more than a decade, this series has been jointly sponsored by the NYU Center for Neural Science and the Grossman School of Medicine to help build community and foster collaborations across the departments and campuses.
Weekly Group Meeting—Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the Grossman School of Medicine have the opportunity to present their ongoing research to the community during a weekly group meeting.
CNS Lab Talks
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present weekly, showcasing the latest research being done at CNS.
Swartz Seminars
Monthly seminar series at CNS featuring invited speakers presenting research on computational and theoretical neuroscience. Seminars are held throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Other Programs
NOGN: Neuroscience Outreach Group at NYU
NOGN coordinates outreach efforts and forms partnerships with organizations throughout NYU and New York City. These partnerships and the dedication of nearly 100 scientist volunteers have allowed NOGN to have a large impact from the onset of the program. Classroom visits, a wealth of Brain Awareness Week Programs, and new initiatives introduced each year mean there are many opportunities to both get involved and to guide our community’s efforts for broader engagement.
GUIS: Growing up in Science
Growing up in Science is a conversation series at New York University that is not about science, but about becoming and being a scientist. How do you deal with your own and others’ expectations, and with impostor syndrome? How do you keep yourself motivated? Faculty members will share their stories and invite you to join a conversation about the human factors that are universal undercurrents of working in academia but that too often remain unspoken. More information about the series and the faculty speakers who have shared their story can be found on the website.
ScAAN: Scientist Action and Advocacy Network
We are a New York-based group of scientists who partner with organizations that are creating positive social change. Our members are doctoral students, PhD-holding research scientists, and professors who donate their skilled labor and expertise to our partner organizations. We compile brief, targeted literature reviews, and analyze pre-existing data. We can also serve as guides to particular domains of scientific knowledge. Our current partners include the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, BagItNYC, Raise the Age New York, and Solitary Watch.
New York University Entrepreneurial Institute
Founded in 2012, the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute leads a university-wide initiative to accelerate the pace of technology commercialization and the launch of successful startups founded by NYU’s 60,000 students, faculty and researchers. The Institute’s team of startup experts and thought leaders offers educational programming, events, resources, and funding, via the NYU Innovation Venture Fund, to inspire, educate, connect, and accelerate entrepreneurs across NYU.
