Findings from health screenings with 1400 Filipinos in NY and NJ during the first phase of Project AsPIRE 2005-2008:

  • 2 out of 5 Filipinos do not have health insurance
  • 3 out of 5 Filipinos have hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • 1 out of 5 Filipinos have pre-hypertension (at risk of developing high blood pressure)
  • Only 1 out of 6 hypertensive Filipinos had their blood pressure under control
  • 1 out of 2 Filipinos were overweight or obese

Hypertension Statistics

  • Heart disease accounted for 33% of all deaths for Filipino Americans compared to 19% for Vietnamese, 24% for Koreans, 28% for Japanese, and 29% for Chinese (Ryan et al., 2000).
  • The rate of hypertension was highest among Filipino men and women (n = 4211) compared to other Asian Americans (n = 1166) (Klatsky et al., 1991).
  • Filipinos ranked among the lowest [OR=0.69 (0.64-0.74)] in adherence to antihypertensive medication when compared to other groups (Taira et al., 2007).
