The South Asian Community in the United States & New York City

  • South Asians are individuals with origins in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.  
  • According to United States (U.S.) Census South Asians are second largest Asian American group in the U.S.  
  • A large percentage of South Asians are foreign-born, and non-citizens which impacts their access to health care.  
  • The New York City (NYC) metropolitan area is home to the largest concentration of South Asians in the U.S.  
  • South Asians collectively comprise almost one-third of NYC's Asian American population.  Between 1990 and 2000, there have been dramatic increases in the growth of NYC's South Asians.
  • There are over 300,000 South Asians living in NYC with the largest concentration in the borough Queens.
