ADHD & Disruptive Behavior Disorders Summer Externship
NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a two-month predoctoral summer externship in the evidence-based treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other disruptive behavior disorders at the Summer Program for Kids in New Rochelle, New York.
The ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Summer Externship, offered through the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, is intended for doctoral candidates who wish to gain experience working with children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, and other conditions resulting in disruptive behavior. You develop and implement behavioral treatments that help improve children’s social and coping skills and build self-esteem.
Externs spend three weeks at the Child Study Center’s Manhattan location participating in comprehensive training to learn parent–child interaction therapy and other behavior and cognitive behavioral treatment strategies. You then travel to The College of New Rochelle to participate in the five-week Summer Program for Kids, where you use functional behavioral assessment to plan and implement treatment for children with ADHD.
During the day camp, you also have opportunities to act as a co-therapist during parent training sessions and to supervise counselors alongside experienced clinicians. Throughout the program, you track patient responses to treatment.
The externship consists of a three-day time commitment each week during the training period (9:00AM to 5:00PM) and four days each week during the summer program (8:00AM to 4:00PM).
How to Apply
We offer two externships each summer. To apply, submit a letter of interest, a writing sample (intake reports preferred), an attestation letter from your graduate program, two to three letters of recommendation from professors or clinical supervisors, and your CV to firstname.lastname@example.org.
