ADHD & Selective Mutism Externship
NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a yearlong, predoctoral ADHD and Selective Mutism Externship through the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders Service and the Selective Mutism Service at the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.
In this special combined externship, you learn about delivering treatments for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), who have organizational skills deficits and selective mutism. Externs can apply for positions at our New York City or Hackensack, New Jersey, offices. Those who work in New Jersey have the opportunity to treat patients with other disruptive behavior disorders.
Candidates must commit two full days per week and arrange to be available on the following days:
- Mondays and Wednesdays
- Mondays and Thursdays
- Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Tuesdays and Fridays
- Wednesdays and Fridays
Externs learn to provide clinical interventions created and developed at the Child Study Center, including organizational skills training, to elementary school–aged children with ADHD. You also learn an extension of organizational skills training for older students and how to deliver treatment for selective mutism.
Other training opportunities include game-based cognitive behavioral therapy for children with anxiety disorder and those with disruptive behavior disorders. All interventions involve extensive opportunities to work with individual children, their families, and professionals in school settings.
You also perform psychodiagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations for children with anxiety disorder, learning disorders, and those with ADHD and co-occurring learning problems, and participate in intake and feedback relevant to these testing cases.
All externs receive training in cognitive behavioral case conceptualization. With the guidance and support of a staff psychologist, you prepare a case presentation, which consists of the case conceptualization, a brief literature review, and an overview of your treatment approach, to present at a team meeting.
You may also assist in presentations given to the NYU Grossman School of Medicine academic community, as well as to local community organizations and professional groups.
Educational seminars, case conferences, and grand rounds at Child Study Center locations and monthly school visits throughout New York City to learn about specialized programs are open to all externs. Opportunities for classroom observations to supplement the clinical evaluation may also be available, as well as chances to participate in clinical research with guidance from staff psychologists.
