The Neuropsychology Externship is offered through the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as part of our Neuropsychology and Learning Service.
The program is intended for doctoral candidates seeking to develop their ability to perform neuropsychological, psychodiagnostic, developmental, and psychoeducational evaluations to assess children with neurodevelopmental and neurological conditions that affect cognitive development and learning.
Externs receive training in neurodevelopmental and cognitive behavioral case conceptualization and participate in intake and feedback sessions for children with learning disabilities at the Child Study Center.
Your clinical responsibilities include performing neuropsychological, psychodiagnostic, developmental, and psychoeducational evaluations, scoring tests, and writing assessments based on test results. You also attend monthly school visits.
To complete the externship, you prepare a case presentation with guidance and support from a staff neuropsychologist to present at a team meeting. You may also choose to assist in preparing presentations for the NYU Grossman School of Medicine academic community or for local community organizations and professional groups.
Although not formally part of the externship curriculum, psychotherapy training may be arranged on an individual basis if supervisors have availability. This is primarily a clinical externship; however, staff at the Child Study Center participate in various research endeavors that you can get involved with.
The externship consists of a two-day time commitment each week, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. You coordinate your schedule with your supervisor.
