Obstetrics & Gynecology Summer Fellowship for Medical Students
NYU Langone’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a four-week summer fellowship to students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine who are between their first and second years of study and would like to explore a career in obstetrics and gynecology. Students enrolled in the accelerated three-year MD pathway complete an eight-week summer fellowship.
Our goal is to provide participants with an overview of obstetrics and gynecology. This fellowship is intellectually challenging and may be physically demanding, but the time you spend in our program is well invested.
Subspecialty Concentrations
Fellowship subspecialty concentrations vary from year to year and may include any of the following:
- reproductive endocrinology and in vitro fertilization
- maternal–fetal medicine
- reproductive health and family planning
- gynecologic oncology
- general obstetrics and gynecology
Preceptor Guidance
We assign each student a faculty member as preceptor. Your preceptor is responsible for creating your daily and weekend schedules, as well as helping you pick a topic for presentation at the end of the fellowship. You also shadow your preceptor in the clinic.
Patient Care Experiences
During your summer fellowship, you may have the opportunity to experience patient care in a variety of settings, including labor and delivery, the operating room, the private office, and the hospital.
You are encouraged to become part of your preceptor’s obstetrics and gynecology team. You may also arrange to join one of our obstetrics and gynecology call teams, if desired.
Summer fellows gain a range of patient care experiences, including the following:
- the obstetrics and gynecology history and physical
- office-based obstetrics and gynecology
- obstetrics and gynecology operative procedures
- treatment of common obstetric and gynecologic conditions
Didactic Training
You are expected to attend grand rounds and integrated care grand rounds each week, and meet regularly with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Summer Fellowship directors to discuss your progress. In addition, reading about obstetrics and gynecology during the program broadens your experience.
Presentation
Your end-of-fellowship presentation is a formal PowerPoint slideshow lasting about 10 minutes. Presentations are brief reviews of a topic of interest or an original research project. You may focus on a topic you encounter during the fellowship or one in which you already have an interest.
