Careers in Dance Medicine
NYU Langone’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries offers internships for students who are interested in careers in dance medicine, and our clinicians also incorporate relevant and timely information about this subject into workshops and lectures.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in dance medicine, you have many educational pathways and disciplines available to you. Below is an overview of careers and academic tracks that can be adapted to and are focused on the special concerns and needs of dancers:
- doctor of medicine (MD) specializing in orthopedic surgery or sports medicine
- doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO)
- doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM)
- doctor of physical therapy (DPT)
- certified athletic trainer (ATC)
- kinesiologist (BS, MS)
- nutritionist (BS, RD)
- acupuncturist (LAc)
- dance medicine researcher (PhD, CCRP)
- physical therapist assistant (PTA)
- physical therapy aide
- dance movement therapist
- massage therapist
- personal trainer (certified)
- somatic practitioner (Pilates, yoga, or Gyrotonic Method instructor; Alexander Technique or Feldenkrais Method instructor; or Laban movement specialist)
