Internships in Dance Medicine for Students

NYU Langone’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries offers internships for students who are interested in careers in dance medicine and who bring professionalism and enthusiasm to this field. We regularly accept interns from many disciplines, including exercise science, athletic training, kinesiology, pre–physical therapy, premedicine, and arts administration.

Internship placement depends on your academic background, the type of experience you seek, and availability. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance. Once you apply, we may request a phone or in-person interview before acceptance. All internships are unpaid; school credit is available in some cases.

General Internship

Our General Internship is geared toward college or graduate students who would like exposure to various careers in dance medicine, including orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, athletic training, education, and not-for-profit arts or healthcare administration. As an intern, you participate in many on- and off-site clinical programs, injury prevention assessments and workshops, continuing education offerings, and more.

The General Internship takes place during the summer from May through August. There is a mandatory contractual agreement between NYU Langone and your school. A minimum of 15 hours per week for 6 to 12 weeks is expected.

If you are interested in applying, please complete the application by November 1.

Because of the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to incomplete or late applications.

Please send any inquiries you may have about our General Internship to harkness@nyulangone.org.

Athletic Training Student Clinical Affiliation Program

Athletic training students in their final academic year may apply for our full-time, hospital-based Athletic Training Student Clinical Affiliation Program. Because this is a clinical position that requires hands-on learning, a contractual agreement between NYU Langone and your school is mandatory. Placement is determined by a review of your CV, academic transcripts, recommendations, dance experience, and a personal interview. Competition for affiliation opportunities is extremely high, and spaces are limited. Positions are only offered in the fall and spring semesters.

To apply, please submit your completed application by the deadline specified for the desired term:

  • For the fall semester (August through December), the deadline is February 1.
  • For the spring semester (January through May), the deadline is July 1; we are not accepting applications for our spring 2021 Athletic Training internship.

For more information, please contact harkness@nyulangone.org or call 212-252-7147.

Physical Therapy Student Clinical Affiliation Program

Physical therapy students in their final academic year who have already completed an orthopedic affiliation may apply for our full-time, hospital-based Physical Therapy Student Clinical Affiliation Program. Because this is a clinical position that requires hands-on learning, a contractual agreement between NYU Langone and your school is mandatory. Placement is determined by a review of your CV, academic transcripts, recommendations, dance experience, and a personal interview. Competition is extremely high, and spaces are limited. Positions are offered only in the spring semester (January through May).

To apply, please submit your completed application by January 31 of the year before your desired starting date.
