New York City Health & Nutrition Examination Survey Research Opportunities
At this time, the New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NYC HANES) investigation team is soliciting proposals from researchers to use the NYC HANES biorepository for investigating issues of local or national public health significance that would benefit from a population-based sample.
Call for Research Proposals Using NYC HANES Biorepository Specimens
Investigators planning to submit proposals should consider the NYC HANES study design and carefully review the survey instrument, the urine and blood tests conducted, physical exam measures, and the biorepository use procedures.
All submitted proposals will be reviewed by the NYC HANES Data Oversight Committee, a multidisciplinary panel of NYU Langone, CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) scientists.
Because there are public use datasets for the 2004 and 2013–2014 NYC HANES, researchers will be able to conduct analyses to assess population-level changes over time using the two cross-sectional datasets. Learn more about the 2004 NYC HANES.
What Comprises the Biorepository?
Serum and urine specimens were collected from most consenting participants (n = 1,216 for sera; n = 1,449 for urine). Serum and urine are stored at the NYC DOHMH’s Public Health Laboratory. For each consenting participant, the biorepository contains approximately 38 ml of sera and 25 ml of urine, all of which are stored at −70 degrees Celsius.
When Must I Submit a Proposal?
Investigators can submit their proposals to firstname.lastname@example.org on a rolling basis. Proposals will be reviewed by the NYC HANES Data Oversight Committee, and notifications will be sent within two months of receipt.
Specific guidelines for submission of research proposals are outlined in the NYC HANES Biorepository Use Procedures document.
What If I Have Questions or Need More Information?
