Obstetrics & Gynecology Summer Fellowship for Medical Students

The four-week summer fellowship program is designed to give NYU medical students between first and second year an opportunity to explore a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The goal of the program is to provide the interested student with an overview of academic Obstetrics and Gynecology, through a preceptorship arrangement. Each student is assigned a member of our faculty as a preceptor. Of note, students enrolled in the 3-year pathway for OB-GYN are required to complete an eight-week summer fellowship.

Externships may be available in the following subspecialties:

  • reproductive endocrinology/in-vitro fertilization
  • maternal fetal medicine
  • reproductive health and family planning
  • gynecologic oncology
  • general obstetrics and gynecology

Your preceptor is responsible for delineating your daily and weekend schedules, as well as helping you pick a topic for presentation at the end of the externship. You shadow your preceptor during your time at our institution; however, your experiences should expand beyond just one on one shadowing. You may have the opportunity to experience patient care in a variety of settings: labor and delivery, the operating room, private offices, and the hospital clinics.

You are encouraged to become a part of your preceptor’s obstetrics and gynecology team. Additionally, you may make arrangements to join one of our obstetrics and gynecology call teams if desired. You are expected to attend our Grand Rounds/Integrated Care Rounds each week. You also meet with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Summer Fellowship Program Director regularly during your externship.

You gain exposure to the following:

  • the obstetrics and gynecology history and physical
  • office-based obstetrics and gynecology
  • obstetrics and gynecology operative procedures
  • treatment of common obstetric and gynecological conditions

You are expected to read during the externship to help broaden your experience. Your end of rotation presentation will consist of a brief review of a topic of interest or an original research project. This may be a topic you come across early in the externship or one in which you already have an interest. However, the topic should be decided early enough for you to complete your research and put together your presentation. This presentation will be a formal computer slide show (PowerPoint) presentation lasting approximately 10 minutes.

This externship is intellectually challenging and may be physically demanding. However, this time spent is well invested.

Please forward a copy of your CV and a letter of interest addressed to Fabio Ferrari, MD, and Shree Chanchani, MD (directors of the Summer Fellowship Program), to Luz-Maria Villa at Luz-Maria.Villa@nyulangone.org

Thank you for your interest.
