NYU Langone’s Department of Ophthalmology offers a comprehensive lecture and conference series designed to provide residents with intensive knowledge of all ophthalmic subspecialties. We progress through each specialty in a sequential fashion and assign the relevant reading from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) book series. The lecture series helps prepare you for the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) exam, given by the AAO each spring as an in-service, and the written and oral board certification exams, given by the American Board of Ophthalmology after residency.

Grand Rounds and Departmental Conferences

Our visiting lecture and grand rounds series includes resident case presentations, local speakers, and nationally renowned visiting lecturers. Our 2022–23 speakers include: James G. Oetting, MD (clinical professor of ophthalmology, University of Iowa); Michael S. Lee, MD (professor of ophthalmology, University of Minnesota Medical School); Maria A. Woodward, MD, MSc (Alan Sugar, MD Research Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Michigan Medicine); Michael F. Chiang, MD (Director, National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health); Jullia A. Rosdahl, MD, PhD (associate professor of ophthalmology, Duke University School of Medicine); and Jennifer I. Lim, MD (Marion H. Schenk Chair for Research in the Aging Eye, University of Illinois at Chicago).

Departmental conferences and courses typically include our NYU Langone Wet and Dry Lab and Cataract courses, Current Concepts in Ophthalmology conference, Research Day, Alumni Day, and a Diversity and Inclusion speaker series. Residents are excused from clinic duties for major educational events.
