Department of Ophthalmology Research

NYU Langone’s Department of Ophthalmology is home to leaders in the field who focus on basic, clinical, and translational research to advance our knowledge of ophthalmic diseases and improve patient care. The majority of our funding comes from the National Institutes of Health. The department’s research program also receives support from philanthropy and industry, and benefits from an unrestricted grant from Research to Prevent Blindness. Many of our research initiatives involve collaboration with other leading academic institutions. Our trainees, who represent a wide spectrum of career paths, are involved in all aspects of research.
We have numerous areas of current interest:
- cells and the extracellular matrix of the cornea
- neural interface engineering
- neuroimaging and visual science
- neurophotonics
- artificial intelligence to guide treatment of pediatric orbital abscess
- zoster eye disease
Through our research programs, our physician–scientists create and discover treatments, techniques, and devices that improve the lives of people with a wide range of ophthalmic conditions.
