Neuropathology Services
The neuropathology service provided by NYU Langone’s Department of Pathology helps clinicians deliver the best possible care for patients. Directed by David Zagzag, MD, PhD, the laboratory support patients from Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and outside referrals.
Staffed by 4 board-certified neuropathologists, the lab accessions more than 1,900 neurological specimens per year, including more than 550 tumors cases that range from stereotaxic biopsies to gross resections. Our neuropathologists also accession many infectious and epileptic cases. We perform more than 200 pediatric and adult brain autopsies each year.
As researchers and clinicians, we advance knowledge of neurodegeneration, neuro-oncology, and infectious disease. In partnership with NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, we developed the first clinical whole-genome DNA methylation profiling for patients with brain tumors.
Our analyses have also played an integral role in NYU Langone’s efforts to understand how and why COVID-19 affects the brain.
Turnaround Time
The turnaround for routine requests is three to five days. For complicated tumors cases that require immunohistochemistry, turnaround is 7 to 10 days.
