Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation is one of the largest rehabilitation medicine programs in the country and has trained more rehabilitation physicians than any other institution in the world.

Our clinical rotations enable residents to master the medical components of physical medicine and rehabilitation so they can deliver the highest-quality medical care to their patients. We take pride in our residents and faculty, who come from diverse backgrounds, including those who are under-represented in medicine. We have designed a clinical experience to include caring for a variety of patient populations, including those from military backgrounds and from underserved communities.

Residents rotate through inpatient and outpatient services at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Each resident spends one or two months on a rotation block at each site before rotating to the next training location. Mission Statement

Our goal is to train outstanding clinicians who serve diverse patient populations, including federal, municipal, and private healthcare systems. Our training encompasses a trifold mission of medical education, patient care, and clinical research, by means of didactic instruction, workplace-based learning, and scholarly projects. Together with our sponsoring institution, we strive to reflect the values of performance, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence through every aspect of physician training. Within our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging, we seek to continually develop our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from recruitment to the daily residency experience.

Residency Schedule

The program uses a pyramidal design in which residents perform most of their inpatient responsibilities early in training and transition to more outpatient opportunities as they progress. Chief residents create call schedules based on postgraduate year, although residents may make requests depending on their personal schedules. PGY-2 residents cover four to five calls per month, PGY-3 residents cover three calls per month, and PGY-4 residents cover one to two calls per month. Each resident has seven call-free months in the course of three years.

Residency Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is based on the level of postgraduate training and subject to all applicable withholdings. Full benefit packages, including malpractice and family medical insurance coverage, are provided by NYU Langone or by Bellevue. We distribute a summary of benefits to each candidate once they are accepted to the program.

Resident Events

Our residents work hard to learn the skills needed to care for their patients but find many opportunities to enjoy their time in New York City while bonding with their fellow residents. Throughout the year, our residents organize many social activities and extracurricular events, including happy hours, dinners, ski trips, camping trips, sporting events, and sailing. Each December, the entire department comes together for a holiday party.

Residency Application Process and Prerequisites

Please submit applications using the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP, also known as The Match). We encourage applicants from various backgrounds to apply.

We invite top applicants to an interview. All applicants who receive an invitation must participate in the interview to be considered for admission to the program. We will conduct all interviews for 2025–26 virtually.

We begin to accept applications for the 2025–26 academic year in fall 2023. The deadline to submit completed applications for consideration is November 10, 2023.
