VA NY Harbor Healthcare System Psychology Internship Program

The VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan Campus offers a predoctoral internship in professional psychology which is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.  The  internship is based in the Psychology Division of the Mental Health Service at the Manhattan VA and is affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine. Consistent with a generalist orientation that emphasizes the basic clinical principles and skills essential to the ethical and competent practice of professional psychology, we provide each intern with a broad range of training experiences in assessment, intervention, and consultation with a wide variety of patients in medical and mental health settings.  Our training program utilizes a practitioner-scholar model, with a strong emphasis on clinical practice that is informed by scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and active learning.  Our goal is to prepare our students for entry into the profession as well-qualified general adult practitioners who are suited to a variety of clinical, academic, and research settings.

The internship training program consists of several required components.  Approximately half of the intern's clinical time is spent on the major rotation. All interns complete rotations (4 months each) on the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, in the outpatient PTSD Clinic, and in Health Psychology/Primary Care Mental Health.

The intern's remaining time is comprised of ongoing, year-long training assignments in outpatient psychotherapy and 6 month assignments in assessment.  All interns carry outpatients in each of the following treatment modalities: psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and specialized treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.  Interns also co-lead one long-term psychotherapy group with a staff member for the year.  Assessments focus mainly on neuropsychological testing, with some additional psychodiagnostic and personality assessment.

Interns' clinical work is enhanced by a diverse program of supervision and didactics.  Finally, depending on interest and available time, interns may engage in elective activities.
