Meta-Research Symposium 2025

The Meta-Research Collaborative and NYU Langone’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute invite you to save the date for an inaugural Meta-Research Symposium, “Meta-Research Matters: Designing the Future of Research.”

Symposium date: October 20, 2025; 1:00PM to 6:30PM.

Call for Abstracts

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Meta-Research Symposium, where we will explore the critical role of meta-research (research on research) and translational science in shaping the future of science and improving research practices. This event will highlight our institution's strategic plans for meta-research and showcase meta-research currently being conducted at NYU. The symposium seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and promote awareness of the meta-research being performed across our institutions. Attendees from across institutional roles and across disciplines are welcome.

Whether you are familiar with the term, or not, your own research experiences have most certainly been shaped by the products of meta-research (and you may be doing meta-research yourself and not know it!) Topics explored in meta-research cover all aspects of the scientific process. A few examples of meta-research occurring at NYU include, but are definitely not limited to:

  • creating a best-practices handbook to protect staff from research participant harassment
  • developing AI tools to enhance efficiency of data processing
  • testing statistical imputation methods for addressing missingness in social network analyses
  • building training tools to disseminate literature review methods at scale
  • CTSI translational science pilot studies improving the processes of translating clinical research into practice

Abstract Submission Due Date: July 2, 2025, 11:59PM EST

Present your meta-research at the symposium: submit your abstract here.

Abstracts being accepted include:

  • research results or ongoing research
  • quality improvement projects or initiatives
  • calls for action/research areas that need attention

The topics covered can come from any discipline or institutional role (e.g. administration, academic researchers, staff, etc.). The submissions should focus on one of the following broad meta-research themes:

  • methods: how research is performed, e.g. study design, analytic approaches, research ethics
  • reporting: how research is communicated, e.g. reporting standards, information sharing, conflict of interest reporting
  • replicability and reproducibility: how research is verified or replicated, e.g. methods of data sharing, efforts to reproduce previous studies
  • evaluation: how research is evaluated, e.g. peer review, funding criteria, research impact
  • incentives: how research is rewarded or supported, e.g. promotion criteria, developing research capacity
  • organization: how research is organized or categorized, e.g. research categorization, interactions between disciplines
