Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at NYU Langone Medical Center provides anesthesia for approximately 1,000 major adult cardiac surgeries, 200 pediatric cardiac surgeries and 1000 thoracic procedures, each year. Our staff also covers 250 adult cardiac surgeries, each year, at Bellevue Hospital Center. Our anesthesiologists employ their advanced training dedicated to cardiac and thoracic anesthesia to make the perioperative period both safe and comfortable for patients. Our team makes use of innovative technologies such as 2D and 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), cerebral oximetry and advanced hemodynamic monitoring. We also utilize epidural and paravertabral anesthesia in select cases.

Clinical Case Mix

Our surgeons pioneered the minimally invasive valve repair technique in 1997 and NYULMC has since become a referral center for valve procedures. Today we deliver anesthesia for Robotic Assisted Mitral Valve Repair, Robotic Assisted Coronary Artery Bypass, and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR),and Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR).. NYULMC is also a referral center for patients undergoing complex aortic surgery and for heart failure patients requiring implantation of a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)  and heart and lung transplants. Traditional approaches to cardiac surgery are often used in complicated re-operative procedures.

We cover a full spectrum of pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries, including single ventricle palliation, switch operations, repair of septal defects, valve procedures, and others. Pediatric patients are taken care of by a group of anesthesiologists within the division who have special training in anesthesia for newborns, infants, and children. This group closely collaborates with other pediatric services of the hospital.

The thoracic patients, we care for, often come from far away to seek treatment at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center. Many are referred due to extensive pulmonary disease and other medical problems. The surgeons at NYULMC use a wide variety of surgical techniques including video assisted and robotic assisted approaches to lung resection.

Our anesthesiologists provide care to patients in settings outside of the operating room including the cardiac catheterization laboratory and the electrophysiology suites. This includes children with congenital disease requiring diagnostic and interventional catheterization procedures, correction of cardiac conduction abnormalities, percutaneous valvuloplasties and device closures.
