Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology
The physicians in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, a part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine, are fellowship trained. We provide anesthesia care for pediatric patients, including preoperative consultation, perioperative anesthesia, postoperative management, and critical care.
Gordana Stjepanovic, MD, division director, leads a team with a fourfold mission:
- to provide pediatric anesthesia care that exceeds standards of the profession and incorporates current research, technologies, and techniques
- to educate physicians in training through hands-on patient care and didactic lectures
- to afford opportunities for clinical research in pediatric anesthesia techniques, outcomes, and pharmacology
- to serve as a resource point for NYU Langone and the community
Our Clinical Services
Our pediatric anesthesiologists provide individualized care for each child we treat. Our primary goal is to ensure children’s safety and comfort before, during, and after surgery. We also provide tailored sedation and anesthesia to children receiving radiological imaging and procedures, gastrointestinal and bronchopulmonary procedures, and other nonsurgical treatments.
Managing patients’ pain is a vital part of the overall care and recovery process. Using a multimodal and multidisciplinary approach, our pediatric pain management service specializes in the assessment and treatment of children affected by a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions.
Our providers are readily available to answer any questions patients and their families may have.
Our Role in Education
Our division devotes numerous resources to the training of future anesthesiologists. We serve as a resource point for other pediatric specialties throughout NYU Langone, and closely collaborate with them. Members of our team are associated with the Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.
Training for Medical Students
During their anesthesiology elective, medical students can choose to receive a week of specialty training in our division.
Training for Residents
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides the highest level of training to physicians in the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine Residency. Residents rotate through the division for eight weeks, learning through supervised hands-on experience and weekly lectures. Our goal is to train our residents to understand not only the physiology and pathology involved in perioperative pediatric care, but also to develop a keen insight into the associated psychological issues and create a nurturing and supportive environment during times of stress and discomfort.
Training for Fellows
Our Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship prepares trainees for an academic or private practice career in pediatric anesthesiology. Fellows rotate through diverse clinical settings to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to practice pediatric anesthesiology.
Our Role in Research
Our division is actively involved in clinical research in a variety of areas of pediatric anesthesiology. Our faculty have presented at national and regional conferences and participated in panel discussions and workshops focusing on pediatric patients.
