Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship
Our one-year Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship provides physicians with a comprehensive training experience in all aspects of obstetric anesthesiology, including clinical care, research, teaching, and administration. This training program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), is offered through the Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology, a part of NYU Langone’s Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine.
Under the leadership of Jeffrey Bernstein, MD, fellowship director, fellows become part of a team that is at the forefront of providing around-the-clock coverage to women choosing NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital for their childbirth. Our obstetric anesthesiology service has steadily expanded, and we now provide care for 6,000 deliveries annually.
Fellowship Clinical Training
Fellows are exposed to the latest evidence-based clinical practices and can take advantage of our close working relationships with obstetricians, pediatricians, and critical care specialists. The Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology works seamlessly with these practitioners as a unified team to provide optimal care for our shared patients. This well-established infrastructure combined with our large caseload makes us ideally suited to training fellows interested in practicing obstetric anesthesiology.
Clinical care activities take place in a wide variety of hospital settings, including the labor and delivery unit, operating rooms, post-anesthesia care unit, postpartum units, and intensive care units. Fellows have formal rotations in the neonatal intensive care unit and on the maternal–fetal medicine service.
Fellowship Didactic Program and Scholarly Project
Fellows are exposed to a rich didactic curriculum, including formal and informal lectures and conferences. They are also required to complete a scholarly project that leads to both presentation at a national meeting and publication under the direction of a faculty mentor. Publication can occur after graduation from the fellowship program.
Additional Work Opportunities for Fellows
Opportunities to moonlight are available within the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine. Moonlighting times are limited to Friday evenings and Saturdays, so work does not interfere with obstetric anesthesiology training.
Fellowship Application Process
To apply for the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship, please register through SF Match and use the organization’s Central Application Service. We accept one fellow each year and fellowship training begins on July 1 of the year following the match and ends on June 30 of the next year.
