About the Division of General Internal Medicine & Clinical Innovation
Sondra R. Zabar, MD
Division Director
The Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Medicine, is a dedicated, hardworking, diverse group of general internists who practice primary care and hospital medicine. Their commitment to advancing compassionate, quality medical care inspires me every day.
Battling COVID-19 has challenged us in ways we never thought imaginable. Our ambulatory physicians took on the role of hospitalists as NYU Langone Health, NYC Health + Hospitals/Belleuve, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System coped with the initial surge of patients at the beginning of the pandemic. The flexibility that our division showed during this crisis demonstrates our preparedness and ability to identify emerging opportunities. These opportunities include efforts to expand telemedicine in primary care, conduct more comprehensive health disparity research, and find new ways reach a virtually-engaged general internal medicine community.
At the same time, we continue to make strides toward our core goal of improving the health of patients in a variety of healthcare settings with strategies that are practical to implement and to translate beyond our walls. As educators, we offer programs that prepare tomorrow’s internal medicine clinicians, investigators, and educators with the complex skills required to advance health. Our educational programs range from web-based initiatives for medical students to renowned primary care and community health residency tracks for internal medicine residents to innovative simulations for medical students, residents, and faculty. We seek to bridge educational and research initiatives that link strategies for medical education and training to patient health outcomes.
As clinicians, we deliver the highest quality of clinical services to patients at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur, the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and an array of affiliated practices and diverse community-based sites at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone that are led by our talented faculty.
As researchers, our portfolio of funded research addresses challenges in improving medical education, disease prevention, and caring for patients with chronic disease among urban populations. Our research areas are broad and include obesity, hypertension, addiction medicine, health equity, transforming clinical care, and quality assurance. We also study the application of information technology and behavior change strategies to improve health.
We hope the many rich educational, research, and clinical programs represented give you a fuller sense for our thriving Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation.
