Obstetrics & Gynecology Fellowships Complex Family Planning Fellowship

Complex Family Planning Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Complex Family Planning Fellowship is a two‐year subspecialist fellowship focused on research, teaching, and clinical practice in abortion and complex contraception under the leadership of Siripanth Nipitta, MD, MS. Our accredited fellowship offers obstetrician–gynecologists clinical training in advanced reproductive and sexual healthcare and development of skills in medical education, epidemiological research, and advocacy.

Clinical Training

Throughout the two years, fellows rotate through NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and The Home Depot Emergency Department at NYU Langone Health—Cobble Hill, as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. The rotation at an NYU Langone ambulatory practice offers the opportunity to care for patients with complex medical conditions requiring specialized family planning care. Fellows perform consultations for complex contraceptive needs under the supervision of an attending physician, working together to develop individualized treatment plans that meet each patient’s unique needs.

The rotation at Bellevue focuses on the development of clinical skills in the provision of hospital-based abortion care, where patients are often referred for a higher level of complex care. The fellow develops teaching skills working alongside residents, and also builds interpersonal and communication skills for effective relationship-building, shared decision-making, and collaboration with patients and care providers in other medical specialties.

Research Training

The core fellowship faculty mentor fellows in conceiving, designing, and completing a scholarly project. Fellows are expected to graduate with advanced training in study design and statistics consistent with their career goals, and to complete a research project focused on clinical or psychological aspects of abortion or contraception. Faculty reinforce knowledge of research methods, study design, and data analysis when working with fellows on research projects. Each trainee is required to defend the thesis before fellowship completion. They may also pursue formal graduate-level coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics.

Our Faculty

The Division of Family Planning is composed of a core group of four faculty members who are fellowship-trained and/or boarded. We are committed to providing comprehensive contraceptive and family planning healthcare.
