Maternal–Fetal Medicine Fellowship
The academic mission of the Maternal–Fetal Medicine Fellowship in NYU Langone’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is to train fellows to be physician–scientists as well as specialists in the field. Under the leadership of Christina A. Penfield, MD, MPH, fellowship director, our three-year training program paves the way for board certification in maternal–fetal medicine. The program accepts two fellows per year.
The first year of your fellowship training consists of clinical duties with a focus on managing inpatient and outpatient high-risk pregnancies and gaining comfort with performing ultrasound examinations. In your second year, you focus on basic or clinical research and required coursework. The third year is dedicated to more specialized clinical exposure, including mandatory genetics and supervisory labor and delivery rotations. You have the opportunity to take advantage of certain elective rotations, including placental pathology, fetal echocardiogram, and family planning. After receiving extensive ultrasound training, fellows leave our program competent in invasive procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and fetal transfusions.
Maternal–fetal medicine fellows rotate through NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur, performing consultations and ultrasounds at each institution under the supervision of our world-class maternal–fetal medicine attendings.
