Neural Interface Engineering

The Neural Interface Engineering Lab, led by Shy Shoham, PhD, conducts research that combines ophthalmology, neuroscience, and engineering. Our research team develops and applies cutting-edge neural interfaces using optical tools based on advanced two-photon microscopy and optogenetics, as well as advanced ultrasound-based systems for stimulation and optoacoustic imaging. These neural interfaces are used in both the retina and cortex for applications that require observation or control, or both, of distributed neuronal activity patterns. Our team is interested in basic science and translational applications to introduce new vision restoration approaches using holographic optogenetics or holographic acoustics.

The Neural Interface Engineering Lab is part of NYU Langone’s new Health Technologies and Engineering Institute, also known as Tech4Health.
