The Neural Interface Engineering Lab, led by Shy Shoham, PhD, conducts research that combines ophthalmology, neuroscience, and engineering. Our research team develops and applies cutting-edge neural interfaces using optical tools based on advanced two-photon microscopy and optogenetics, as well as advanced ultrasound-based systems for stimulation and optoacoustic imaging. These neural interfaces are used in both the retina and cortex for applications that require observation or control, or both, of distributed neuronal activity patterns. We are interested both in basic neuroscience applications of bidirectional neural interfacing and in translational applications of these technologies.
