Description
Please note: This is the same introductory ophthalmology elective as the "Ophthalmology SRE" offered during the surgery clerkship. Students should not take both.
This is a survey-type elective utilizing outpatient and operating rooms of the NYU Langone Eye Center and Bellevue Hospitals. Attendance at all departmental conferences is expected. Students will work with the ophthalmology attendings and residents at these sites to learn the fundamentals of clinical ophthalmology and clinical examination skills. They will rotate through the various ophthalmology subspecialties to learn about the practice of clinical ophthalmology.
This elective should be taken by any student who would like to learn more about the practice of outpatient ophthalmology and those interested in applying in ophthalmology but unable to take the “Ophthalmology SRE” course during the surgery clerkship. Students interested in emergency and inpatient ophthalmology should consider the “Consultation Ophthalmology” elective instead.
Objectives of the Elective
The student should learn about the eye, clinical eye examination techniques, and common ophthalmic diagnoses that should be understood by all physicians. The elective will combine medical student specific lectures, online activities, and in person clinical experiences to be introduced to the field of ophthalmology. Learning will be enhanced through simulation.
Clinical examination skills covered will include the basic eye examination, use of the slit lamp, and ophthalmoscopy. Students will gain familiarity with ophthalmic imaging modalities including fundus photography, ocular coherence tomography (OCT), and visual fields.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective
- Gain a basic understanding of eye anatomy, common eye diseases and treatment, and achieve proficiency with the slit lamp and other simple eye diagnostic testing.
- Participate meaningfully in the care and management of eye patients in the general eye clinic including history and physical, exam, and assisting the resident and attendings.
- Attend all assigned clinics and all departmental lectures/conferences including Grand Rounds.
Didactic Program
The students participate in introductory lectures as well as a dedicated online medical student didactic series. More information will be provided at the start of the rotation.
Method of Evaluation
Students are evaluated by the residents, the faculty preceptor and the director of residency training. Attendance at clinical sites and didactics is required.
