Description
A two week elective is offered to provide students with an introduction to clinical Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. Each student spends one week at Bellevue Hospital and one week at Tisch/Kimmel Hospital. Emphasis is placed on developing the skills to perform an ear, nose and throat, and head and neck examination, participation in clinic and in-patient management, and observation of otolaryngologic surgery. Students will also attend both clinical and basic science conferences.
Objectives of the Elective
Students will learn to perform the physical examination of the ears, nose, throat, and neck. They will be introduced to common otolaryngologic complaints and pathologies by attending clinics and ward rounds. They will be able to assist in the operating rooms so they can see the application of their knowledge of regional anatomy and pathology to the surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose and throat.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective
- Students will attend daily hospital rounds, weekly Grand rounds and head and neck conference.
- Attendance at 4 Bellevue clinic sessions, including pediatric otolaryngology clinic, is required.
- Operating room assignments are made by the Chief Resident.
- Opportunities are readily available to attend office hours with the private attending staff.
Didactic Program
The student is encouraged to attend and participate in all departmental conferences: weekly Grand rounds on Mondays, and multidisciplinary head and neck tumor conference on Tuesdays. Monthly facial paralysis and reanimation center patient conference, and patient safety & quality improvement (PSQI) conference/ MM’s. Weekly didactic recordings are uploaded to Brightspace.
Method of Evaluation
Attending physicians and chief residents are responsible for student evaluations.
