Description

Students with an interest in pursing a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency will benefit from this four-week elective.

Students will be assigned to both inpatient and outpatient sites during the four-week elective.

During the inpatient experience, students will participate in the diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with the following conditions: stroke, amputations, orthopedic cases (fractures, replacements, etc.), spinal cord injury, and head trauma. In addition to management of the medical care of patients with disabilities, an understanding of the rehabilitation "team" approach is stressed in the overall management of such patients.

Depending on the student’s preference, they can rotate through various clinics such as: Sports Medicine, Spine interventions, Acupuncture, Muscular Dystrophy, Brain Injury, Prosthetic and Orthotics, and General Musculoskeletal clinic, to gain exposure to general outpatient rehabilitation problems. There is also an opportunity to work with Pediatric Rehab and Electrodiagnostics, if interested.

Objectives of the Elective

To gain an in-depth understanding and robust exposure to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation and patient management through daily contact with patients, topic discussions, case presentations, scheduled lectures and review of core journal articles pertinent to the filed. Patients with a wide range of disabilities will be seen, evaluated, and treated.

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

1. Participation in daily morning rounds and patient care with Residents and Attendings.

2. Following 1-2 inpatients, and being involved in their medical and rehabilitation management.
