Who should enroll in this elective?

Students who are considering Otolaryngology as a career

Students who are entering an allied field, such as Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Pediatrics or Ophthalmology in which an understanding of common otolaryngologic conditions (sinusitis, otitis, pharyngitis, vertigo etc) and basic skills in physical examination of the head and neck would helpful

Students who are simply interested in this clinical area

Description

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of Otolaryngology. As an introductory elective, students will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Each student spends one week at Bellevue Hospital and one week at Tisch/Kimmel Hospital. Emphasis is placed on developing the skills to perform an ear, nose and throat, and head and neck examination. They will be introduced to common otolaryngologic complaints and pathologies by attending clinics and ward rounds. They will be able to assist in the operating rooms so they can see the application of their knowledge of regional anatomy and pathology to the surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose and throat. Students will also attend both clinical and basic science conferences.

Objectives of the Elective

By the end of this elective, through daily contact with patients and didactics, you will:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of the field of otolaryngology, building on your pre-clerkship and clerkship experiences, through a broad exposure to otolaryngologic disorders
  2. Expand your skills in inpatient and outpatient workup and management of patients with otolaryngologic disorders 
  3. Learn about specialty-specific history and physical exams as well as the indications for, and complications of specialty-specific procedures
  4. Begin to learn how to perform otolaryngologic procedures and surgery through greater hands-on participation 
  5. Gain knowledge regarding treatment modalities used to treat otolaryngologic diseases, including otolaryngologic emergencies, such as airway obstruction
  6. Gain insight into the interdisciplinary nature of this specialty and how our clinicians interact with other medical disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care
  7. Explore the option of otolaryngology as a career choice

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

By enrolling in this elective, you have agreed to:

  1. Participate in at least 35 contact hours of education each week
  2. Provide communication of any excused absences to the Office of Student Affairs (excused absence form) and to the elective coordinator, in a timely fashion 
  3. Arrive in a timely fashion to all locations to which you are assigned  
  4. Participate in daily morning rounds and patient care with residents and attendings
  5. Be an active participant in the care of patients being followed by the team, as dictated by the resident/attending
  6. Assist in operating room procedures
  7. Attend all outpatient clinic assignments, including 4 Bellevue clinic session (including pediatric otolaryngology clinic) 
  8. Attend all didactics provided for trainees, as outlined below
  9. Have the option of observing faculty office practice situations

Method of Evaluation

Students will be evaluated by the ward resident, ward attending, and clinic attending. Dr. Max April will collect feedback from residents and attendings with whom students have had contact and will write a summative evaluation, which will be submitted at the completion of the rotation.
