Training Sites

Residents receive their training at NYU Langone Medical Center, NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan Psychiatric Center (MPC) 125th Street Clinic, Kirby Psychiatric Forensic Center, and the Rockland Psychiatric Center (RPC), which includes the White Plains Clinic and the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI), and the Counseling and Wellness Service on NYU's downtown campus.

The training program includes diverse patient populations. This combination provides house staff with a truly comprehensive educational experience. Bellevue, NYULMC and the VAMC are contiguously located along First Avenue from 23rd Street to 34th Street; MPC and Kirby are both 7 miles from the main medical center complex on Ward's Island, and the 125th Street Clinic, the outpatient arm of MPC, is located at 163 West 125th Street. RPC and NKI are located 21 miles from New York Hospitals Center and the White Plains Clinic is a 50-minute drive from the Rockland campus. The college mental health clinic is part of the downtown Counseling and Wellness Service at Washington Square.

NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue is a 912-bed acute-care general hospital, one of the largest single municipal hospital buildings in North America. It is the flagship hospital of New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation, the nation's largest municipal health-care system. The origin of Bellevue Hospital can be traced to the colonial era and has a rich history of service to the community. Its association with NYU dates back over 100 years. Its medical staff consists largely of NYU faculty and residents.

Tisch Hospital is the 726-bed University Hospital of NYU Langone Medical Center, opened at its present site in 1963. It serves as focus for a broad spectrum of highly regarded tertiary care programs, including psychiatry, comprehensive cancer care, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery and organ transplantation. NYU’s Tisch Hospital is consistently recognized as one of the leading general hospitals in the New York metropolitan area.

VA NY Harbor Healthcare System provides care to Veterans in the NY greater metropolitan areas and has facilities in all boroughs except the Bronx. The main campuses are located in Manhattan on 23rd Street and First Ave and in Brooklyn in the Bay Ridge section (near the Verrazano Bridge). The main campuses provide primary / tertiary medical and psychiatric care, with the NY campus serving as a VA referral site for neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. NYU Psychiatry and Neurology/Psychiatry Double Board residents, Psychosomatic Medicine fellows, and Addiction Psychiatry Fellows rotate at the Manhattan Campus. The Psychiatry Service at the Manhattan campus includes 42 inpatient acute psychiatry beds, a comprehensive, multi-modality/multi-disciplinary outpatient program providing care to approximately 4000 Veterans, specialized PTSD and Addiction (including OTP) outpatient programs, a C/L service spanning both inpatient and medical care domains, and 24/7 psychiatric consultant in the ED.

Manhattan Psychiatric Center (MPC) is a psychiatric facility operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health. It primarily serves patients with severe and persistent mental illness. The inpatient facility has approximately 160 patients requiring intermediate- or long-term hospital treatment. The MPC 125th Street Clinic in Harlem is the MPC outpatient, serving approximately 600 patients most of whom are located in Harlem and surrounding neighborhoods.

Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center is a 193-bed maximum security state forensic hospital that cares for and evaluates patients involuntarily committed under the New York Criminal Law (Insanity Acquitees and Defendants found incompetent to stand trial) and involuntarily committed civil patients found to be dangerous and unmanageable in other state facilities.

Rockland Psychiatric Center (RPC) is the largest state hospital system in New York serving 370 adults in inpatient beds and 3500 outpatients in 7 counties in the Hudson Valley. RPC has 10 clinics in these counties and two ACT Teams, as well as telepsychiatry capabilities on our main campus. The main campus in Orangeburg has the inpatient hospital, an on-grounds outpatient clinic, and several residences for outpatients transitioning to the community. Also located on campus is the Recovery Center, a clubhouse model program in which members learn skills for living in the community, and which contains a working studio/art gallery. Residents have been placed in the RPC clinic in White Plains, the Orangeburg Clinic and Recovery Center, and using telepsychiatry on campus.

The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) at Rockland Psychiatric Center is one of two state facilities devoted to full-time psychiatric research. Research at the Institute seeks to find the causes, pathophysiology and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), schizophrenia and the major mental disorders basic research, clinical research and mental health services research are conducted.

The NYU Counseling and Wellness Service provides mental health treatment to undergraduate and graduate students of New York University.
