Cardiac Arrest Research Studies

Patients who are treated for cardiac arrest at NYU Langone and other participating hospital may receive additional experimental treatment protocols in addition to standard cardiac arrest care. These experimental treatments may potentially improve the low survival rates we see with standard care.

Our research team is planning to study the treatment of patients who experience cardiac arrest in two different research studies. One treatment protocol involves providing red blood cell transfusions to patients having cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The second involves providing magnesium, a neuroprotective medication, after cardiac arrest. Given the relatively low risk associated with providing these additional treatments to patients experiencing cardiac arrest, there is a high likelihood that patients will receive one of them even when consent is not obtained. Please refer to the individual study pages for more information.

If you choose to opt out, your name will be placed into a database that informs the research team of your decision. If an individual in the opt-out database has a cardiac arrest, they will still receive all standard of care cardiac arrest and post-cardiac arrest treatments recommended by the American Heart Association. The individual, however, will not receive additional experimental protocols in addition to standard treatments.
