Electron Microscopy Technologies & Instruments

NYU Langone’s Microscopy Laboratory uses powerful electron microscopes to obtain high-resolution images of your specimens. Electron microscopy sample preparation is generally a drop-off service. However, if you prefer to perform your own imaging and are a new user, we can provide training. If you are an experienced user, we can offer—with approval—the materials required for your experiment. See our fees for technologies and instruments.

All required forms are available in iLab.

Electron Microscopy Technologies

Our in-house electron microscopy technologies include the following:

  • embedding using either epoxy or acrylate-based embedding resins at ambient or low temperatures
  • thin sectioning using a Leica Ultracut UCT microtome or Leica EM UC6/EM FC6 cryoultramicrotome
  • cryoultramicrotomy using a Leica EM UC6/EM FC6 cryoultramicrotome
  • immunolabeling following pre- or postembedding protocols
  • Tokuyasu immunogold labeling of ultrathin cryosections
  • high-pressure freezing using a Bal-Tec HPM 010 (located at the New York Structural Biology Center), and freeze substitution by a Leica EM AFS2 automatic freeze-substitution system
  • negative staining of viruses, bacteria, and macromolecules
  • rotary shadowing using a BOC Edwards Auto 306 evaporator for DNA, RNA, and macromolecules
  • electron tomography data collection using either a Philips CM200 or an FEI Tecnai F20 transmission electron microscope (TEM) (located at the New York Structural Biology Center)
  • three-dimensional electron microscopy using a newly purchased Zeiss Gemini 300 field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) with Gatan 3View® or an FEI Helios 650 DualBeam SEM (located at the New York Structural Biology Center)
  • correlative light and electron microscopy
