NYU Langone’s Microscopy Laboratory uses powerful electron microscopes to obtain high-resolution images of your specimens. Electron microscopy sample preparation is generally a drop-off service. However, if you prefer to perform your own imaging and are a new user, we can provide training. If you are an experienced user, we can offer—with approval—the materials required for your experiment. Electron Microscopy Technologies

Our in-house electron microscopy technologies include the following:

• embedding using either epoxy or acrylate-based embedding resins at ambient or low temperatures
• room temperature thin sectioning and cryo-ultramicrotomy using Leica EM UC6/EM6/EM7 cryo-ultramicrotome
• array tomography sectioning using a Leica ARTOS 3D microtome
• Tokuyasu immunogold labeling of ultrathin cryosections
• high-pressure freezing using a Leica EM ICE, and freeze substitution by a Leica EM AFS2 automatic freeze-substitution system
• negative staining of viruses, bacteria, and macromolecules
• rotary shadowing using a BOC Edwards Auto 306 evaporator for DNA, RNA, and macromolecules
• electron tomography data collection using JEOL1400 Flash TEM with Fischione 2040 dual axis tomography holder, or ThermoFisher Talos120C TEM
• three-dimensional electron microscopy using a Zeiss Gemini300 field-emission SEM with Gatan 3View
• correlative light and electron microscopy
• the Objects Dragonfly software for segmentation and 3D visualization
