deciphEHR: Pioneering Genomic Medicine at NYU Langone Health Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is deciphEHR?

deciphEHR is a basic science and clinical research program on genomic medicine at NYU Langone with the goal of establishing the infrastructure for personalized genomic clinical care. The program pursues joint analyses of whole genome sequences of consented NYU Langone patients with their electronic health records (EHR).

What type of genomic data is available through deciphEHR?

The primary data is on whole genome sequence (WGS). Our current data includes low-coverage WGS with imputed high-quality genotypes for single nucleotide variants with frequency of 0.1%-0.5% and higher, and for insertions or deletions with frequency of 5%-10% and higher. We are currently working to establish high-coverage and long-read whole genome sequencing for a subset of samples.

What clinical data is available?

The current v1 dataset includes de-identified, longitudinal clinical data from 11,000 patient records. These data can help researchers understand disease progression and treatment effects over time. For data not included in our de-identified dataset, researchers can apply for their own independent IRB approval.

How is the data acquired?

Data has been acquired under the Universal Consent protocol, initiated by the Center for Biospecimen Research & Development (CBRD) at NYU Langone. Residual blood from clinical CBC tubes, which would otherwise be discarded, is collected from consented participants for genomic research.

How can researchers access the data?

Researchers can access the entire deciphEHR dataset by applying through our "Apply for Access" page.

How does deciphEHR ensure data privacy and security?

All data are de-identified to protect patient privacy. Access to the data is controlled through an application process, ensuring that only authorized researchers can use the data for approved studies. For data not included in our de-identified dataset, researchers can apply for their own independent IRB approval.

Who can use the deciphEHR data?

The data are available to any researcher and clinician at NYU Langone and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Researchers must apply for access and comply with all ethical and research guidelines which may change with time.

Can I apply for access if I am not an NYU Langone or NYU Grossman School of Medicine researcher or clinician?

No, currently access is only available within NYU Langone and NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
