The Emergency Healthcare Leadership and Operations Fellowship provides fellows with an opportunity to practice as independent clinicians while working with an emergency department (ED) leadership team from NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine.

The goal of our fellowship is to prepare physicians for leadership positions in ED operations. Through hands-on clinical and didactic training at NYU Langone and at NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, we provide fellows with the skills they need to navigate the complex interplay among EDs, academic medical centers and community hospital administration, local communities, patients, trainees, and other key stakeholders.

Fellowship Clinical Training

Leadership and operations fellows train at world-class clinical sites, including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, The Home Depot Emergency Department at NYU Langone Health—Cobble Hill. Across these locations, we care for more than 500,000 patients each year.

Fellows are immersed in our busy urban practice and gain experience in a wide variety of emergency settings, such as high-acuity EDs, a freestanding ED, observation units, urgent care clinics, and a Virtual Urgent Care program.

Fellowship Didactic Training

Fellows are actively engaged in healthcare operations and strategy and gain a comprehensive understanding of how to be leaders in the field. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in a range of educational initiatives led by department faculty and residents and to partner with community-based organizations in New York City and throughout New York State.

Master’s in Public Administration

Concurrent with training at NYU Langone, fellows enroll in a two-year MPA in health policy and management program at NYU Wagner. This curriculum is an excellent complement to fellowship training and enhances fellows’ exposure to the dynamics of community health and the healthcare delivery system.

Fellows receive free tuition at NYU Wagner in addition to a fellowship salary commensurate with those of similar fellowship positions.

Fellowship Curriculum

Our two-year curriculum gives fellows in-depth knowledge of healthcare operations and administration through a wide variety of learning experiences.

MPA Coursework

Through NYU Wagner, fellows complete 14 courses in health finance, health policy analysis, and health services management.

Capstone Program

The MPA Capstone program is a two-semester assignment that fellows complete in teams. Each team addresses a pressing social question related to health and proposes an innovative solution that is viable within existing healthcare administration parameters.

Experiential Learning

Fellows are immersed in the Department of Emergency Medicine for the duration of their fellowship. Training is divided into eight three-month blocks that focus broadly on quality improvement, patient safety, leadership and change management, and ED operations.

Our curriculum is designed to provide two years of longitudinal experience with our ED leadership team as it manages routine operations and addresses issues affecting patient health, such as quality and efficiency of care, patient experience, hospital financial management, social determinants, and wellness.

Clinical Experience

Fellows spend an average of 16 hours per week in various ED settings across our clinical sites.

Length of Fellowship Training and Eligibility

The Emergency Healthcare Leadership and Operations Fellowship is a two-year appointment.

Applicants completing a three- or four-year emergency medicine residency are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in those who are dedicated to public service, have a passion for leadership, and show an interest in ED operations.

We accept applications on a rolling basis starting each July, with preference for applications received by September 15. Appointments begin the following July.
