Institute for Innovations in Medical Education Digital Experience Program

Creating a seamless digital experience for patients, researchers, clinicians, staff, and students at NYU Langone has long been an institutional strategy and priority. In February 2020, the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education initiated the Education Digital Experience (EDX) program. For this undertaking, we partnered with student and faculty, and the Offices of Medical Education, Student Affairs, Graduate Medical Education, Admissions, and Diversity Affairs, as well as the NYU Health Sciences Library, New York Simulation Center, and NYU Langone’s Medical Center Information Technology.

The goals of the programs are as follows:

  • to improve educational outcomes through greater use of novel and effective education technologies and an improved user experience
  • to improve the student experience and deliver a robust ecosystem for learning
  • to improve the faculty experience and support adoption of new teaching and assessment technologies
  • to enable a continuously learning medical education system

Holistic, Continuous, and Collaborative Efforts

We have experienced great success with our EDX program due mostly to our commitment to user-centric design. Because we work with students to better understand their needs and continually solicit feedback on how our programs were working, we are able to create an experience that benefits them. The analytics we have collected to date on application usage have been crucial in allowing us to adapt our products along the way and provide insights into how we can improve in the future.

A robust education digital experience allows us to better engage our students throughout their learning journey. Through the EDX program, we continue to innovate in the area of digital education and maintain NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s status as a leader in medical education.

Featured Education Technology Projects

The following are some of our education technology projects.

Pathfinder: For Precision Education

Pathfinder provides an interface to define a homepage experience for all students, faculty, and staff. Students are able to view resources for each stage of their academic journey as well as define their intended research topics and residency choices. Administrators can manage educational prompts and view usage and analytics in real time.

COMET: For Evaluation and Assessment

The Collaborative Organizational Mobile Evaluation Tool (COMET) serves as the data collection tool for all evaluation and assessment activities. The application automatically sends out lecture evaluation requests to a percentage of our students, collects clerkship assessment data within each rotation, allows students and faculty to participate in workplace-based assessments, and requests real-time assessments of resident performance from faculty when patients leave the operating room.

Cosmos: For Grades and Comments

Cosmos is the collective grades and comments portfolio for all preclerkship, clerkship, selective, and elective data for our medical students. Cosmos allows coordinators and program directors to process vast amounts of assessment data easily and prepares content for the Dean’s Letter.

TITAN: For Curriculum Mapping

The Information Technology Academic Navigator (TITAN) is the curriculum mapping tool for all our medical school activities. TITAN automatically syncs with Brightspace, our learning management system; parses lecture slide data for keywords; and links event objectives to module and stage. This creates a holistic view of all teaching activities and provides meaningful insight to our curriculum improvement processes.

MSPE: For Student Performance Evaluation

Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is the Dean’s Letter tool students use during their final academic year to prepare for residency applications. This application collects data from Cosmos and allows students, advisors, editors, and deans to collaborate and build an accurate depiction of the student’s academic career.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

We provide clinically relevant immersive experiences for education and exploration.

NYU Langone Virtual Microscope

Our novel medical education tool includes more than 1,500 digital histology and pathology slides.
