Section for Health Equity Conferences & Events
The NYU Center for the Study of Asian American Health (CSAAH), at NYU Langone’s Section for Health Equity in the Department of Population Health, hosts a biennial conference on promoting health equity that brings together community members, clinical providers, students, researchers, and policy makers. Our conference explores key challenges and opportunities facing Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) immigrant communities in New York City.
In addition, ongoing seminars and symposia aim to address health disparities in the AANHPI community in real time. These seminar series provide valuable resources and information for healthcare professionals, students, and community members to learn about and better understand the health concerns and challenges specific to these populations.
Dismantling Stereotypes: Changing the Narrative
The 2018 conference, our most recent, was the 9th Biennial Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Health Conference. Called Dismantling Stereotypes: Changing the Narrative, it was co-hosted by CSAAH and AARP, in partnership with the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF)—a national organization with 30 years of experience in community coalition building and health promotion activities. The event brought together diverse experts, community stakeholders, and practitioners from across the country to discuss and identify innovative ways to dismantle cultural misconceptions and stereotypes and to mobilize AANHPI communities to action to address health inequities.
Speakers and attendees discussed strategies to overturn dominant narratives, learn about health disparities in underrepresented and often “hidden” AANHPI communities, and work to cultivate partnerships to continue promoting health equity for AANHPI communities. The keynote speakers were Howard K. Koh, MD, MPH, former assistant secretary of health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, MD, director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health.
Health Disparities Symposium
The annual Health Disparities Symposium is presented by the Section for Health Equity and co-sponsored by NYU Langone’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Department of Population Health, and Office of Diversity Affairs. It typically features a series of brief, engaging talks on the work being done to address health disparities and to achieve health equity in racial and ethnic minority and other underserved communities; a panel discussion on controversies in population health; a listening session on community perspectives of research; and a poster session and awards ceremony.
