General Surgery Subinternship Elective—Visiting Students Only

Prerequisites: Surgery & Medicine Clerkships at home medical school.
Description
The surgical subinternship in surgery is meant to give the student who is interested in the field more in-depth experience. The student will take on the responsibilities of an intern. In this capacity, they will see consults in the emergency room and on the floor, manage patients that have been admitted to the service, and assist in the operating room. In addition, the student will be responsible for a short project, either a presentation or a short paper on a relevant topic. Students may rotate on a number of services at multiple hospitals, including:

- Bariatric Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery
- Ranson Hepatobiliary Service
- Spencer General Surgery Service (Including MIS/Foregut)
- Transplant Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue
- Acute Care (Trauma) Surgery
- General/Bariatric Surgery
- Surgical Oncology
Objectives of the Elective
This rotation introduces the student to general surgical principles including pre-op evaluation, intra-op decision making and post-op care. Students will deal with surgical illness, surgical critical care and non-operative care of the critically ill. Students should become “experts on the abdomen.”
Key Responsibilities of the Student While on Elective
- Students will follow patients and provide care, presenting on attending rounds and assisting in the operating room.
- Students have night call and participate in evaluation of patients.
- Students attend all surgery conferences.
Didactic Program
Rounds and clinics are scheduled for each service.
Method of Evaluation
Students are evaluated by the house staff and those attendings who interact most closely with them.
