Description
This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on urologic knowledge and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Urology Introductory Elective. As an advanced elective, the student will be expected to serve at the level of a sub-intern. The student will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through participation in inpatient and outpatient clinical sites, including opportunities in uro-oncology, pediatric urology, female urology, stone disease, male sexual function and fertility. During the 4-week advanced elective, students will get increased exposure to the care of patients with urologic disease through greater hands-on experiences. In particular students will have the opportunity to:
- Observe urologic procedures and assist in urologic surgery
- Participate in outpatient urologic care
- Participate in the daily management of inpatient management of urologic patients.
Students will also join the departmental housestaff in all departmental didactics, as outlined below.

Method of Evaluation
Evaluation is to be done by the urology faculty and residents, based on clinical performance, fund of knowledge, histories and physicals, interest, response to instruction, behavior and interpersonal relationships, professional demeanor and reliability and maturity on a scale ranging from outstanding to inadequate. By midnight Friday evening send me an email to Dr. Najari identifying one attending and one resident with whom you worked closely with during the week that can evaluate your performance. These should be different people every week.
Feedback
Every week, right after Grand Rounds, you with Dr. Najari to discuss how things are going.
Also, please plan on meeting with Dr. Lamont Barlow on Thursdays at 4PM for student advising. His office is 6005W on the 6th floor of the VA. Please email him to confirm the dates and times.
Assignments
During the first week or two, in consultation with the chiefs, please identify an interesting case to present at Grand Rounds. This should be a 15 minute presentation that will be presented Monday morning at Grand Rounds. The presentation should be reviewed with an attending prior to Grand Rounds.
Mentors
You will be assigned an attending who you will spend time in clinic or the OR once each week during the month. Please email them to coordinate this day of the week. You are still expected to round with the hospital team that morning even if you are in clinic.
Call
You will be expected to take one daytime call at Tisch during one single weekend day of the month, and one overnight call during the week. Please coordinate with the Tisch chief for the specific days. You must absolutely follow the same rules for duty hours that apply to the residents. You cannot do anything clinical during the day following your overnight call.
Meeting with Program Leadership
During your weeks at Tisch, if possible, you should spend a day in clinic with the Chairman, Dr. Lepor. Please coordinate this with the Tisch chief. During your week at Bellevue, please arrange a time to meet with the Program Director, Dr. Kanofsky.
