Headache Medicine Fellowship

Adelene Jann, MD, Director

The NYU Langone Health Department of Neurology offers a one year UCNS (United Council for Neurological Subspecialties) accredited Headache Medicine Fellowship Program for neurologists who have completed their ACGME residency requirements. The Division of Headache has recently expanded to five board-certified headache specialists who are full-time faculty members. Dr. Lawrence Newman, the Director of Headache, was the immediate past-president of the American Headache Society. The program maximizes the availability of the multidisciplinary programs at NYU that are essential to the management of complex headache disorders -- including psychiatry, pain management, and concussion.

Summary of the curriculum:
Fellows in the program will receive both clinical and didactic training in the basic science, diagnosis and management of primary and secondary headache disorders. Fellows will gain experience in procedural skills such as chemodenervation injections, trigger point injections, and various types of peripheral nerve blocks. Our fellows also manage outpatient intravenous infusion therapy which allows for a comprehensive educational experience. We offer the opportunity for fellows to explore complementary medicine options such as biofeedback and acupuncture. Elective time is spent with pain medicine, orofacial pain, and the choice of other areas of professional interest. One half day a week of academic time will be used for clinical research or self-study. Research opportunities include participation in current research trials in the Division of Headache, or developing an independent research project. NYU Faculty offer didactic lectures on headache pathogenesis and neuralgias. The Division of Headache holds bi-monthly meetings to review case presentations, research studies and journal clubs. The fellow is responsible for journal club meeting presentations.

Fellows whom have successfully complete a year of training are eligible for subspecialty certification in Headache Medicine through the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties.

To be eligible, applicants must have successfully completed three (3) years of ACGME-approved Neurology Residency training program in the United States.
Although not required at the time of application, an active New York State Medical License will be considered mandatory prior to starting the fellowship.
