Night Float

PGY 2 and PGY 3 residents cover Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals, and the Manhattan VA through a night float (NF) system. One resident covers Bellevue Hospital, and another resident covers Tisch Hospital. A third resident (PGY 3 or PGY 4 level) covers the Tisch neuro-ICU. The NF resident does overnight in-house call from Sunday night through Friday night.

Night float rotations begin at 6:00 PM and at 7:00 AM the next morning. During weekends, the on-call PGY 4 resident rounds on new patients and follows up on active consults at Bellevue and the VA Hospital.

Tisch NF starts at 6:00 PM and at 7:00 AM the next morning. During weekdays, the Tisch NF resident covers the Epilepsy Center after 9:00 PM. During weekends, the Tisch NF resident covers both Tisch Hospital and the Epilepsy Center if any issues should arise.

Saturday is a 24 hour traditional call at both Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals.

Under close supervision by the on-call neuro-critical care attending, PGY 3 and PGY 4 residents provide overnight neuro-ICU coverage through a NF system.

In total, PGY 2s have approximately 8 weeks of NF, and PGY 3s have approximately 4-5 weeks of NF per year. PGY 4s have approximately 2 weeks of neuro-ICU NF, with the rest being home call (approximately 6 weeks/year).

Call rooms are equipped with computers with the ability to place orders and view films. At each hospital, there is access to high speed internet, TV, bed, desk, and mini-refrigerator.
