Division of Hand Surgery

The Division of Hand Surgery in NYU Langone Health’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery is one of the largest academic and clinical divisions of its type in the nation. Medical students, residents, and fellows receive their training from our renowned faculty in the prevention, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, fingers, forearm, and elbow.

Our faculty consists of more than 20 board-certified and fellowship-trained hand surgeons who evaluate and treat thousands of patients each year. We use nonoperative and minimally invasive operative procedures when appropriate, and our care is closely integrated with the occupational and physical therapists who work with us.

Hand Surgery Education

The NYU Langone Health Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery trains fellows in the treatment of disorders of the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. Fellows assist in caring for patients at our two weekly clinics and present at weekly conferences along with residents. Your fellowship experience includes operative intervention for such disorders as compressive neuropathies, trauma, arthritis, tendonitis, and rheumatoid deformities. Clinical care is provided at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. At the discretion of the program director, you may also work at other affiliated institutions.

We offer five fellowship positions each year, which represent the recent integration of the Emmanuel Kaplan Fellowship (originally at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, now NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital) and the Eaton Fellowship (originally part of the C. V. Starr Center for Hand Surgery). These five positions are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Please submit all application materials for our fellowship directly through the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

As part of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery’s residency program, residents complete rotations in hand surgery.

Medical students wishing to explore orthopedic surgery may participate in electives in the Division of Hand Surgery as part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century.

Hand Surgery Research

Investigators in our division focus on clinical research aimed at improving functional outcomes in patients with hand and upper extremity problems. In collaboration with the department’s Center for Clinical Research and the Center for Quality and Patient Safety, we pioneer research in hand and upper extremity trauma, reconstruction, congenital irregularities, and sports injuries and rehabilitation in injuries, including in the following areas:

  • compressive neuropathies
  • congenital hand reconstruction
  • distal radius fractures
  • flexor tendon injuries and rehabilitation
  • microsurgery and replantation
  • nerve reconstruction

Medical students, residents, fellows, and surgeons have opportunities to conduct research alongside faculty. Learn more about research in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Hand Surgery Clinical Services

Our board-certified and fellowship-trained hand surgeons provide comprehensive care for the many conditions that affect the upper extremities. These include acute traumatic injuries such as fractures, dislocations, and lacerations of tendons, nerves, and arteries; traumatic amputations; chronic post-traumatic reconstruction problems; arthritic conditions of the wrist and hand; acquired conditions, including nerve compression syndromes and tumors; congenital deformities; neuromuscular disorders in children and the elderly; microsurgical reconstructive cases; and brachial plexus injuries.

Hand and upper extremity evaluations are most often performed at NYU Langone’s Hand Center, where our core faculty provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic care. Our services are fully integrated with those provided by physiatrists and occupational and physical therapists. We also collaborate closely with rheumatologists, neurologists, radiologists, and plastic surgeons to provide patients with seamless interdisciplinary care.

We maintain a busy clinical and operative presence at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, and Bellevue.

Our hand specialists offer the full spectrum of care for upper limb conditions to patients of all ages. When surgery is necessary, we use the most sophisticated, evidence-based techniques. We perform more than 5,000 hand and upper extremity procedures each year.
