Department of Surgery Education

We offer opportunities in surgical education to medical students, residents, and fellows.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine educates tomorrow’s surgical leaders through an array of opportunities that balance teaching, research, and clinical activities. In addition to training for medical students, residents, and fellows, we offer continuing medical education opportunities to healthcare professionals who wish to further their education.

Surgery Education for Medical Students

NYU Grossman School of Medicine students, as well as those visiting from other institutions, are provided the following opportunities for surgical training:

Surgery Residencies

Our residency programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME):

Surgery Fellowships

We offer accredited surgical fellowship training in eight subspecialties, as well as one unaccredited fellowship. Each of our training programs affords fellows an unmatched educational experience:

Postgraduate Training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

NYU Langone’s Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, through NYU Grossman School of Medicine, offers two postgraduate medical education pathways to board certification in vascular surgery: an Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency and Vascular Surgery Fellowship.

Under the guidance of Mikel Sadek, MD, program director, and an outstanding faculty, our residency and fellowship offer rich and extensive opportunities to participate in routine and complex open surgical and endovascular procedures, as well as basic science and clinical research, and to present at local and national vascular surgery conferences. Our former residents and fellows hold prominent positions in our field, have received numerous awards, and gained leadership positions throughout North America and internationally.

Residency and Fellowship Faculty

Faculty in our division are national leaders in the field of vascular surgery. They are academically active and productive and include editorial board members of major vascular surgery journals, officers and committee members of national and regional vascular surgery societies, editors of and contributors to major vascular surgery textbooks, principal investigators of clinical trials, prolific authors, and National Institutes of Health grant recipients.

Clinical Training Sites

Residents and fellows in our program rotate at three inpatient sites: NYU Langone’s Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. Take a virtual tour to explore our residency and fellowship training sites.

Kimmel Pavilion

Kimmel Pavilion is a large, technologically advanced tertiary care center with eight hybrid, open, and endovascular operating suites. Here, residents and fellows gain the following experience:

  • supervising the vascular surgery service, with patients directly under their care
  • participating in and performing both routine and difficult and complex vascular surgery and both open surgical and endovascular procedures
  • directly overseeing general surgical residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners
  • seeing patients in the offices of the vascular surgery attending faculty members

Bellevue

Bellevue, a major public hospital in New York City’s NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation, provides vascular surgical care to a diverse urban population and functions as the premier Level 1 Trauma Center in Manhattan. Here, vascular residents and fellows encounter broad and in-depth experience in vascular trauma and caring for a population notable for its socioeconomics, languages spoken, and geographic origin. Although trainees see all aspects of vascular surgery at Bellevue, the site offers a particularly rich experience in thoracic aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections.

Manhattan Campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System

This site provides vascular surgical care to veterans and is the referral center for advanced vascular surgical care of several nearby Veterans Health Administration hospitals. Here, vascular fellows and senior vascular residents participate in all aspects of vascular surgical care for a patient population with often advanced and complex levels of disease.

Additional Resources

In addition, we offer the following clinical resources and rotations:

  • outpatient vascular intervention center, where both percutaneous arterial and venous interventions are performed in an outpatient setting
  • academic outpatient Vein Center, which offers procedures for varicose veins and venous insufficiency, including ablation, microphlebectomy, and sclerotherapy
  • Intersocietal Accreditation Commission–accredited noninvasive vascular laboratory, managed by the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
  • New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM), where detailed instruction in vascular surgical techniques is offered
  • outpatient clinics at all three inpatient training sites

Case Volume

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery performs a high volume of procedures each year, including the following:

  • 1,000 major vascular surgical procedures, including both open surgical and endovascular interventions, at Kimmel Pavilion
  • 500 major outpatient percutaneous arterial and venous interventions at our outpatient vascular intervention center
  • 2,000 outpatient interventions for varicose veins and venous insufficiency at our Vein Center
  • an additional 500 vascular procedures performed at Bellevue and the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System.

How to Apply

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for both the integrated residency program and fellowship program. We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
