Division of Acute Care Surgery
The Division of Acute Care Surgery in NYU Langone Health’s Department of Surgery specializes in providing acute care surgery and surgical critical care to patients, conducting research that advances the field, and training tomorrow’s acute care and critical care surgeons.
Acute Care Surgery
Our teams provide acute care and trauma surgery services at two sites: NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.
Acute Care Surgery at Bellevue
A major focus of clinical teaching in the Division of Acute Care Surgery is Bellevue, the premier hospital in New York City’s municipal hospital system. Bellevue is a regional center for replantation and spinal cord injury, a Level 1 Trauma Center, a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, the stand-by hospital for the United Nations and for the president and vice president when they are in New York City, and a key provider of healthcare to the local community.
The Bellevue trauma service consists of six dedicated trauma surgeons, a trauma program manager, three trauma registrars, an injury prevention and outreach coordinator, a performance improvement coordinator, trauma advanced care providers, general surgery house staff, emergency medicine and surgical subspecialty attendings and residents, and rotating medical students.
The service admits approximately 1,500 patients per year with a 90:10 blunt-to-penetrating trauma caseload. Separate emergency department resuscitation rooms for both adult and pediatric trauma are located within feet of the CT scanner.
The surgical suite includes 18 operating rooms, with at least 1 room always available for a trauma patient. Critically ill trauma patients are cared for in the shock–trauma intensive care unit (ICU) by the trauma–anesthesia–critical care, or TRACC, team, which consists of surgery, anesthesia, and emergency medicine residents supervised by a surgical or anesthesia intensivist trained in critical care.
Acute Care Surgery at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn
The Trauma Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn was the first Level 1 Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. In addition to the nearby communities of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, it serves the greater borough of Brooklyn.
We collaborate daily with our colleagues from the Departments of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine, Neuroscience and Physiology, and Orthopedic Surgery; the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine; the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery; Rusk Rehabilitation; the Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation; and the nursing teams to care for more than 1,200 trauma patients each year. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to address all aspects of patient care. We are dedicated to considering each patent as a whole person.
Surgical Critical Care
In addition to providing treatment for people who have experienced physical trauma, our experts provide surgical critical care services at Bellevue, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. Division faculty direct and staff surgical and cardiovascular ICUs, providing innovative patient care and education.
Our faculty have distinguished themselves as leaders and innovators in approaches to injury and critical illness and have garnered numerous accolades in safety and education. They oversee a multispecialty, multidisciplinary staff that manages patients with organ failures and those recovering from complex procedures, including mechanical circulatory support, solid organ transplantation, cardiac and thoracic surgeries, and major trauma.
Surgical Critical Care at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion
At Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, our team provides care to patients in two ICUs:
- Kimmel Pavilion surgical ICU
- Kimmel Pavilion cardiovascular ICU
Surgical Critical Care at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn
At NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, we care for more than 1,000 emergency general surgery patients and 750 critically ill patients annually in our surgical ICU.
Our community commitment extends beyond the hospital: We present monthly injury prevention events throughout Sunset Park and Bay Ridge and partner with local senior centers and schools to provide education aimed at keeping our neighbors safe. We ensure that events and materials are available in a variety of languages so that we are accessible to everyone.
Our commitment to excellence in the field begins with ensuring residents, fellows, and medical students receive the highest-quality education available. We offer a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship through the Division of Acute Care Surgery.
