Center for Human Genetics & Genomics Medical Student Programming

The Center for Human Genetics and Genomics offers a variety of programming for medical students.

Human Genetics Student Interest Group

Open to all medical students, NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Human Genetics Student Interest Group is recognized by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The interest group aims to provide engagement opportunities in clinical genetics.

Human Genetics Elective

The Human Genetics elective provides an in-depth exploration of genetic medicine for medical students in their third and fourth year. This two-week intensive comprises didactics, clinical exposure, journal club, clinical case discussions, and a genome informatics workshop.

The objectives of this selective include the following:

  • exposure to state-of-the-art research methods and applications in genetics and genomics
  • opportunity for hands-on experience through student-led projects
  • exposure to career opportunities and research in genetics and genomics
  • preparation for the future of genetic medicine irrespective of future specialty

Summer Research Opportunities Program

Students completing their first year of medical school can choose six weeks of research in human genetics and genomics, relevant to medicine, during the Summer Research Opportunities Program. The purpose of this program is to provide students with longitudinal research experience, exposure, and mentorship on fundamental skills of biomedical research and scholarship.

Interprofessional Experience

Through interprofessional experiences, first-year medical students shadow genetic providers in numerous genetics clinics throughout NYU Langone. The objectives of the interprofessional experiences for students are as follows:

  • to gain exposure to various genetic specialties
  • to gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of genetics providers in patient care
  • to identify the opportunities and means of fruitful interactions with genetics providers

Lunch and Learn

Medical students of all years are invited to participate in interactive discussions surrounding interesting topics and current events in genetics over lunch. Discussions center on thought-provoking emerging matters in the field, seminal papers, or news stories in the media.
