Special Emphasis on Empirically Supported Assessment & Treatment for Challenges in ADHD & Related Disorders & Selective Mutism Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a 12-month postdoctoral fellowship within the organizational skills training and executive function treatment program of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders Service and the Selective Mutism Service. These services are located at the Manhattan and New Jersey campuses of the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.

Our postdoctoral fellowship, offered through NYU Langone’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is intended for psychologists who have successfully completed an American Psychological Association–approved internship and wish to emphasize the delivery of innovative and empirically supported treatments that were developed and enhanced at the Child Study Center. This fellowship emphasizes assessment and treatment in two unique programs with supervision provided from program founders.

Postdoctoral fellows report to Richard Gallagher, PhD, Director of the Organizational Skills Training Program and Founder of the Selective Mutism Service, and Rachel A. Kupferberg, PsyD, Director of the Selective Mutism Service.

Fellowship Training

As the Empirically Supported Assessment & Treatment for Challenges in ADHD & Related Disorders and Selective Mutism Fellow, you will emphasize the delivery of clinical services with children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related disorders, children with selective mutism, and other anxiety disorders. The postdoctoral fellowship allows fellows to enhance their general skills in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults, with a particular emphasis on organizational skills and executive function training and cognitive behavior therapy for selective mutism.

You will work closely with program directors to disseminate evidence-based treatments pertaining to the protocols. Both services stress thorough assessment and multimodal treatment including individual, family and group therapies as well as associated parent training and school consultation.

As a fellow, you conduct individualized assessments and provide behavioral and cognitive therapies. You will become proficient in delivering the individual, parent, and school consultation components needed to build organizational skills for home and school challenges. You will also be trained in the delivery of Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), facilitate monthly intensive treatment groups as well as a four-day intensive group treatment program for children with selective mutism. In this comprehensive center, you collaborate with psychopharmacologists, learning specialists, and other multidisciplinary team members and in school settings.

Fellows will receive referrals from all Child Study Center site locations and are also assigned cases with other diagnoses. Fellows have previously been assigned cases that have Tourette’s Disorder, ADHD with co-occurring anxiety and depression, family interaction problems, and anxiety disorders other than selective mutism.

A portion of the fellow’s time is committed to research efforts and dissemination to professionals and public. You have access to data gathered in several completed randomized controlled trials that have investigated the treatment of executive functioning deficits. Support and encouragement for presenting at conferences and developing manuscripts is a component of this activity. Single-subject case studies on selective mutism for presentations and posters will be conducted to determine what innovations are needed to make the quickest advances.

Fellows help conduct webinars, media appearances and workshops, seminars, and professional development trainings in regional schools and other environments. Involvement in providing educational programming for parents and school professionals is expected.

You also have opportunities to train and teach junior-level psychology trainees and psychiatry residents and guide special projects with the assistance of advanced undergraduates.

Candidates who have experience with treatments for early childhood disorders, including PCIT or PCIT-SM are strongly encouraged to apply.
