Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Outpatient Rotations

As part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, our fellows participate in rotations through a variety of ambulatory clinics to gain extensive experience in pulmonary disease management.

VA NY Harbor Healthcare System Pulmonary Clinic

Schedule: half day per week during the first year

James Tsay, MD
Supervisor

All first-year fellows attend continuity clinic on Monday afternoons at the Manhattan VA NY Harbor Healthcare System under the supervision of pulmonary faculty. This clinic serves as an introduction to “bread and butter” pulmonary outpatient medicine prior to transitioning to Bellevue Chest Clinic in the second and third years. Fellows see an average of five patients each session including one-to-two new patients and four follow-ups. Weekly VA radiology conference presented by VA pulmonary faculty is a highlight of this rotation.

Bellevue Pulmonary Function Tests Lab, Respiratory Failure

Beno W. Oppenheimer, MD
Supervisor

All first-year fellows rotate through the André Cournand Cardiopulmonary Physiology Lab. On this rotation, the fellows get a formal introduction to respiratory physiological principles and techniques that they apply to the diagnosis and management of patients with a variety of respiratory problems. They interpret all pulmonary function testing done at Bellevue during their rotation and act as the respiratory failure consult for the wards. The PFT and physiology lab are named in honor of Dr. André Cournand, who received the Nobel Prize in 1956 for work developing the use of the right heart catheterization to understand cardiopulmonary physiology.

Bellevue Chest Clinic

Caralee E. Caplan-Shaw, MD, and Angeliki Kazeros
Supervisors

All second-year fellows have afternoon continuity chest clinic at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Fellows see an average of three new patients and five follow-ups per week. Patients in the Bellevue Chest Clinic have a wide variety of pulmonary pathology including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and tuberculosis.

Bellevue Asthma Clinic

Bellevue Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic―Elective

Rany Condos, MD, and Nathaniel C. Nelson, MD

Third-year fellows can choose to attend the interstitial lung disease clinic once a month at the Bellevue where advanced lung disease patients are cared for. Patients with advanced lung disease have also been referred from this clinic to have received lung transplants at the patient care at NYU Langone.

Schedule: two to four weeks

Nishay Chitkara, MD
Supervisor

Fellows spend time between the NYU Faculty Group Practice Neuro Sleep Center, the Bellevue Sleep Clinic, the Men’s Health Clinic, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System Sleep Clinic. Fellows will have the opportunity to both read sleep studies and also to evaluate patients in the outpatient setting.
