Prerequisites: Successful completion of Surgery and Internal Medicine Clerkships at an LCME accredited institution.

Description

The sub-internship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is designed to provide the student who is interested in Vascular Surgery an in-depth exposure to a large, diverse Division of Vascular Surgery at a major academic medical center. Our Division has an active inpatient and outpatient Vascular Surgery service at the Tisch / Kimmel Pavilion of NYU Langone, a busy urban tertiary care center. Cases include the entire spectrum of vascular surgical disease, including carotid disease, aortic disease, lower extremity arterial disease, dialysis access, diabetic foot care, superficial and deep venous disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, and other less common vascular conditions. This is supplemented by an Outpatient Intervention Center where percutaneous arterial and venous interventions are performed, and an Academic Vein Center. We also maintain an active Vascular Laboratory, outpatient clinics, and have extensive research opportunities.

Objectives of the Elective

The elective will introduce the student to the general principles of vascular surgical disease, including didactic knowledge, patient evaluation, preoperative care and decision making, deciding between open surgical and endovascular intervention, intraoperative participation and decision-making, and postoperative care. Students will be able to follow patients from the outpatient to the inpatient setting, participating in all aspects of their care.

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

The student, under supervision, will assume the responsibilities of an intern. In this capacity, they will see consults in the emergency room and in the hospital, assist in the care and management of patients admitted to the service, and participate in the operative and interventional management of the patients. The student will be responsible for one didactic presentation at the weekly Vascular Conference on a topic of interest, a case presentation, or Journal Club presentation.

Additionally:

1. Students will follow patients and provide care under supervision, presenting on rounds, and assisting in the Operating room.
2. Students are expected to attend all relevant didactic conferences.
3. Students are expected to participate in night call twice during their rotation.

Didactic Program

The Division of Vascular Surgery has an active didactic program, which takes place four mornings each week from 7am to 8 am:

Monday – Case Planning Conference
Tuesday – Main Vascular Surgery Conference
Wednesday – VSCORE Curriculum
Thursday – Department of Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Method of Evaluation

Students will be evaluated by the Vascular Surgery Attending Staff, as well as by Senior Vascular Surgery Residents and Fellows. The elective is graded on a pass/fail basis.
