Tracing its origins back more than a century ago to the first adult cardiology clinic in the United States, the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, part of the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Health, is widely recognized as one of the preeminent academic cardiovascular programs in the country. Our division comprises an expansive network of more than 300 clinical cardiologists; a robust research faculty supported by more than $45 million annually in grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Heart Association, and other agencies; and a dedicated cadre of talented educators. Our highly collaborative and forward-looking team of physicians, scientists, and educators prides itself on expanding the knowledge base that enables us to provide state-of-the-art, personalized, and compassionate care to people affected by or at risk of cardiovascular disease.

NYU Langone’s cardiovascular clinical network has witnessed enormous growth during the past decade, and currently includes inpatient care at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, as well as a fully integrated network of outpatient practices throughout the greater New York metropolitan area. Complementing our team of consultative cardiologists, our Division of Cardiology boasts multidisciplinary specialty programs in virtually every facet of cardiovascular medicine, including advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant—which is ranked No. 1 in the Northeast by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients—adult congenital heart disease, cardiovascular disease prevention, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiovascular genetics, cardio-rheumatology, interventional cardiology, structural and valvular heart disease, geriatric cardiology, and cardiac rehabilitation.

Basic and translational scientists within the Cardiovascular Research Center pursue fundamental discovery science in areas including cardiac developmental biology and congenital heart disease; vascular biology and atherosclerosis; cardiac inflammation and immunobiology; stem cells and cardiac regeneration; ion channel biology and cardiac electrophysiology; and myocyte biology and cardiac hypertrophy and failure. Investigators in our Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center coordinate a broad array of local, national, and global multicenter clinical trials, including pivotal studies that have defined the standard of care for patients with heart disease such as the International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches (ISCHEMIA Trial).

The Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology also offers numerous clinical and research fellowships, including our long-standing Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–approved Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and advanced fellowships in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, preventive cardiology, and structural heart disease. We also offer advanced research training to highly qualified candidates through our NIH-funded T32 Training Program in Cardiometabolic Diseases.

In addition to these offerings, each year our expert faculty host a broad range of continuing medical education symposia for healthcare professionals, focusing especially on rapidly evolving topics within cardiovascular medicine such as cardio-rheumatology, structural heart disease, and cardiovascular genetics. Finally, we also sponsor a series of educational seminars open to the public on topics such as risk factor modification and cardiovascular prevention, women and heart disease, genetics and heart disease, and other areas of particular interest to the lay public.
