Vice Chair for Research, Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine leads NYU Langone departments in sponsored biomedical research funding, including substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Research in our department spans the full spectrum of investigation, including fundamental laboratory-based discovery science, translational research, single and multisite clinical trials, population health, and epidemiological studies.

The academic pursuits of our nationally and internationally recognized faculty have led to the development of novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic agents, as well as important contributions that, in many cases, have helped establish the guidelines for the management of a broad range of common and rare diseases.

The Department of Medicine research portfolio includes more than 500 funded basic, translational, and clinical projects. During the past year, we received approximately $60 million in total research funding, which has a projected value of $345 million.

Research collaborations within the Department of Medicine are numerous and far-reaching, benefiting from the strengths of the broader NYU Langone biomedical research community. The majority of our laboratory-based faculty members hold dual appointments at NYU Langone’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and other departments, centers, and institutes. All have access to various institutional resources through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and scientific cores and shared resources in areas such as genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, genetically engineered mouse modeling, and high-throughput screening.

Faculty in the Department of Medicine also lead or participate in numerous training grants in areas such as cardiovascular biology, obesity, diabetes and metabolism, rheumatology, stem cell biology, and other biomedical specialties, providing unparalleled opportunities for aspiring physician–scientists preparing for investigative careers. They also serve as mentors for numerous PhD candidates, as well as for predoctoral trainees in the Medical Scientist Training Program, one of the first of its kind in the country.

Making biomedical discoveries and innovations that improve care and quality of life in our extraordinarily diverse patient population is our passion. Whether through fundamental science that identifies new pathways and targets for drug development, rigorous randomized clinical trials that critically examine emerging therapies or treatment paradigms, or meta-analyses that retrospectively examine the efficacy and safety of established pathways, our investigators seek to push the boundaries of biomedicine to advance the delivery of highly personalized care for every NYU Langone patient.
