Renewing Your License

Students are offered housing licenses through June 30 of each year. Licenses may not be canceled in the middle of the academic year unless eligibility ends due to a leave of absence, termination from the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences program, or a PhD defense.

Students have the opportunity every spring to either renew their licenses for another year or terminate them and vacate as of June 30 with appropriate advance notice.

Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences students are expected to vacate housing within 30 days of their thesis defense. Students defending between March 1 and May 31 may request a housing extension to no later than June 30. Students defending between September 1 and December 1 may request an extension to no later than January 1. If you are interested in requesting a housing extension, which is subject to review and approval on a case-by-case basis, email Associate Dean for Research Training and Communications Susanne Tranguch, PhD, MBA, at Susanne.Tranguch@NYULangone.org as soon as the thesis defense is scheduled. If an extension is requested, the student must continue to receive an NYU Langone paycheck during the extended period, so that rent will continue to be deducted.

Each year there is a designated housing transfer request period for graduate students living in NYU Langone housing who want to move to a new location. Announcements regarding the transfer application period will be made before the start of the process.

Subletting Your Apartment

Students may apply to sublet their housing spaces to an NYU affiliate who is eligible for an NYU Langone ID card. Sublets of 4 to 12 weeks per academic year are permitted for each student, with the permission of roommates, if applicable. Students can download the subletting policy and forms to begin the subletting process.
